Electrical Troubleshooting
Dead outlets, breakers that keep tripping, lights that flicker, and faults that only show up when nobody is looking. We find the cause instead of guessing at it.

Salinas Fault Diagnosis
Some electrical problems announce themselves. Most just quietly stop working, or work most of the time, which is worse. Electrical troubleshooting in Salinas is the part of the trade where experience actually shows, because the symptom you can see is almost never in the same place as the fault causing it.
Good electrical troubleshooting starts from that fact. A dead outlet is rarely a dead outlet. A breaker that trips is rarely a bad breaker. We work the circuit methodically, test under real load rather than guessing from a reading at rest, and tell you what we found and why it happened rather than handing you a replacement part and a bill.

Symptoms
This is where most electrical troubleshooting calls start. Find your symptom below to see what it may point to and what we check first. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can come from several different conditions, and only testing on site settles it.
Before booking electrical troubleshooting, try these. We would honestly rather you fix it in two minutes than pay us to. These three are safe, and between them they account for a large share of the calls we get.
These are the ones that turn a small electrical troubleshooting job into a large repair, or worse.
Our Method
Electrical troubleshooting is a process of elimination done in a deliberate order. Skipping steps is how people end up replacing parts that were never the problem.
We start at the panel and establish what is actually on the affected circuit, which is frequently not what the labels claim. A circuit tracer maps the run so we are working from the real layout rather than an assumption made in 1972.
A connection that reads fine with a meter at rest can still fail the moment current flows through it. We measure voltage drop and current draw with the circuit working, because that is the condition the fault actually appears in.
Working from the panel outward, we open and test devices and junctions in sequence until the break, short, or overheating termination is located. Thermal scanning finds hot connections without pulling every device, and insulation testing finds damaged cable inside walls.
You get told what failed, why it failed, and whether it is a one-off or a sign of something broader in the system. Then a price for the repair, and the decision is yours.
What We Install
Every home is different, but a complete 200 amp panel upgrade in Salinas covers all six of these steps.
Adding a charger at the same time is usually cheaper than two separate visits. See our EV charger installation page, or ask our residential electrician team to bundle rewiring, lighting installation, and safety work into the same permit.
Call 831-272-4229 for a written estimate from a licensed and insured electrician in Salinas, on the Monterey Peninsula, or anywhere in Monterey County. We work seven days a week and stay reachable through the job, from disconnect to reconnect.
A 200 amp panel upgrade always needs a permit and a passed inspection, and the sequencing trips up a lot of homeowners. The permit has to be open before the swap, the inspector has to sign off after it, and only then will PG&E release the meter and restore service.
We manage that whole chain. The applicable permit is pulled in our name, we attend the inspection rather than leaving you to explain the work, and we book the PG&E disconnect and reconnect windows so the three do not fall out of order. You get the signed documentation at the end, which matters later at resale or when an insurer asks.
Most 200 amp panel upgrades are finished in one day on site. A full service change with a new mast and meter socket can stretch into a second day, and the utility scheduling window is usually what drives the calendar rather than the labor itself. We give you the realistic date range at the estimate, not an optimistic one.
Your service has to be de-energized while we work. Where conditions allow, temporary backup power for selected essential loads can be arranged on an as-needed basis, subject to equipment capacity. It is not a life safety system and should not be relied on for medical equipment. If you depend on powered medical equipment, please have an independent backup plan and tell us when you schedule.
Anyone quoting a flat price for a 200 amp panel upgrade sight unseen is guessing. Four things move the number: whether the meter and service entrance are being replaced or reused, how far the panel sits from the meter, whether the existing branch wiring is sound enough to reconnect, and how many circuits get rebuilt along the way.
A straight panel swap on a healthy service sits at the low end. A full service change with a new mast, meter socket, and relocated panel sits well above it. We run the load calculation, inspect the service, and hand you a written itemized estimate before scheduling. Wisetack financing is available if you would rather spread it out.
Some panels warrant evaluation regardless of amperage. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco equipment has a documented history of breakers failing to trip under fault conditions, and many insurers and inspectors flag them specifically. Other older equipment, including some Sylvania, Challenger, and Murray panels, may be obsolete, discontinued, or hard to source parts for, which is a different issue and does not by itself indicate the same failure history.
Where replacement is warranted after evaluation, it is often the practical moment to address capacity at the same time, since the service is already open. Whether that means a 200 amp service or something else depends on the load calculation. We also convert old fuse boxes to modern breaker panels and add subpanels for garages, shops, and ADUs.

Common Questions
The main cost drivers are whether the meter and service entrance have to be replaced, how far the panel sits from the meter, whether the existing branch wiring is reusable, and how many circuits get rebuilt. A straight panel swap on a sound service costs far less than a full service change with a new mast and meter socket. We do a load calculation and give you a written, itemized estimate before any work is scheduled, and Wisetack financing is available.
Most panel swaps are completed in a single day on site. Your service does have to be disconnected while we work. Temporary backup power for selected essential loads can often be arranged on an as-needed basis, subject to site conditions and available equipment capacity. It is not a life safety system and should not be relied on for medical equipment. Most homeowners find the interruption manageable, but the extent of coverage depends on the equipment and the loads involved.
Yes. Any work on the main service equipment requires an electrical permit and an inspection. We pull the applicable electrical permits, schedule the inspection, attend it, and coordinate the PG&E disconnect and reconnect so you are not chasing three different offices.
Sometimes. If your meter socket is rated below the new service size, is damaged, or is an older combination unit that is no longer serviceable, it gets replaced as part of the job. We inspect the meter, mast, and service entrance conductors during the estimate so the scope is clear before we start rather than becoming a surprise mid-project.
Often, but it depends on the calculated load rather than the service size alone. A 200 amp service can commonly carry a Level 2 EV charger, a heat pump, an induction range, and normal household loads together, though the equipment you select and your existing conditions decide that. We run a load calculation before recommending a panel size, and in some cases load management or a reduced-amperage charger circuit is the better answer than a larger service.
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco equipment has a documented history of breakers failing to trip under fault conditions, and many insurers and home inspectors flag them specifically. Replacement is commonly recommended after evaluation. Other older brands may simply be obsolete or difficult to source breakers for, which is a serviceability issue rather than the same failure history, and those are assessed case by case.
